5 Steps to Social Security Disability Determination

These are the five tests you must pass to get Social Security Disability benefits:

    1) Are you working?

If you work and earn too much money, you may be disqualified from disability benefits. Our disability advocates can help you determine where you stand.

    2) Is your medical condition severe?

Your health problems must be bad enough interfere with basic activities of daily life. You need to submit medical evidence showing this. We’ll work with you and your doctors to prove the severity of your condition.

    3) Is your health problem on the official list of conditions that qualify?

Social Security keeps a list of impairments that can qualify you for benefits. It’s harder to win benefits if your condition isn’t on the list—but it’s not impossible. It takes severe symptoms and medical documentation of those symptoms to qualify.

    4) Can you do the work you did previously?

You must show that your health makes it impossible to do your most recent job. If needed, we can have you evaluated by an expert who can testify about the demands of your previous job and your ability to perform that job considering your health limitations.

    5) Can you do any other type of work?

If Social Security decides you cannot do the work you did before, they’ll consider your ability to do other kinds of work. Age, education and work experience all factor into this decision.

If you’re wondering whether you qualify, it costs you nothing to get an evaluation of your situation from the experienced disability advocates at Mathis & Mathis.
