    Multiple Sclerosis Symptoms that Can Qualify You for Disability

    Any disability claim requires showing that your symptoms prevent you from working.

    Symptoms of MS vary depending on what kind of MS you have:

    • Relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis
    • Primary progressive multiple sclerosis
    • Progressive relapsing multiple sclerosis

    But in general, MS symptoms you can put in your disability application include:

    • Balance problems
    • Coordination problems
    • Difficulty walking
    • Tremors
    • Bowel and bladder problems
    • Mental health problems
    • Memory difficulty
    • Vision loss
    • Hearing loss
    • Fatigue

    The Social Security Administration (SSA) also provides a listing of impairments that can qualify you for benefits when you submit the right proof.

    This is how the SSA describes the MS effects that you can show:

    • Persistent Disorganization of Motor Function: Difficulty walking or using your hands, partial paralysis, tremors, sensory disturbance or involuntary movements
    • Visual Impairments: A significant decrease in vision that cannot be corrected, including less than 20/200 after correction and 20% or lower peripheral vision
    • Mental Impairments: Organic mental disorder causing memory loss, decreased intellectual function as demonstrated by IQ testing, or mood disturbance
    • Severe Reproducible Fatigue: Substantial muscle weakness with repetitive activity, caused by neurological dysfunction in the central nervous system

    How to Prove Your MS Disability Claim

    The qualifications to win benefits are that:

    • Your MS is so severe that you cannot work
    • You will not be able to work for at least a year
    • It’s not possible for you to switch to another line of work

    The way you prove this is with medical documentation, including:

    • An MRI showing lesions in your brain
    • Results from a lumbar puncture that show MS
    • Results from a vision test showing the impairment level required by the SSA
    • Physicians’ notes describing your depression or fatigue related to your MS
    • Statements from family, friends, co-workers or others about how MS impacts your daily life
